On Friday 10 May, author Rosie Hewlett will be heading to The Amelia Scott to talk about her Sunday Times best-selling book, Medea, and she’s being interviewed by Partner Victoria Sampson.
Medea is a tale of Ancient Greek mythology, magic and vengeance which has been told many times but Rosie’s new retelling is bold and beautifully written. One Amazon review describes Rosie’s prose as ‘sumptuous’, adding ‘Medea perfectly sat in that line of lyrical myth and accessible narrative – feeling fresh and different’. Another said, ‘It’s so beautifully descriptive that I got lost in Medea’s world and I never wanted to leave’.
Throughout her life, Medea has been shunned by her mother, separated from her sister and tormented by her father and brother. All because she possesses a mysterious and powerful gift – magic.
But when a dashing young hero, Jason, arrives to claim the famed Golden Fleece that her father fiercely protects, Medea sees her opportunity for escape. Her offer to help Jason overcome the trials set by her father sets in motion a journey that will see her battle monsters, dethrone kings and fall in love. But, when faced with the ultimate betrayal, Medea is driven to an act of desperation so brutal, it rips apart the lives of everyone involved.
Having secured a first-class honours degree in Classical Literature and Civilisation at the University of Birmingham, Rosie Hewlett has studied Greek mythology in depth and is passionate about unearthing strong female voices within the classical world.
“Medea is a complex character and someone I felt I liked and disliked in equal measure while reading this astonishing book,” says Victoria Sampson. “I am excited to talk to Rosie about how she felt sitting with this powerful queen in her head and how she went about retelling Medea’s story for a new generation.”
Victoria is interviewing Rosie Hewlett on Friday 10 May at 6.00pm at The Amelia Scott Upper Atrium. Order tickets here: https://theamelia.co.uk/whats-on/rosie-hewlett-medea.html
