Friday 16 June marks the fifth national Care Home Open Day when care homes across the UK are throwing open their doors to connect with their local community. Last year 4,300 care homes took part.
The theme for this year is ‘friendship’ and emphasises the importance of connecting with local communities, developing lasting relationships and encouraging intergenerational rapport. Care homes are being encouraged to celebrate friendships that have developed between residents, families, friends and staff, as well as with their neighbours, to reinforce how they should be an integral part of their local area.
Research published this week by Care England, published in Care Home Management, shows that the British public still isn’t planning ahead for care, with almost half of the population – 47% – having a holiday fund as opposed to only three per cent that have a care home fund.
Furthermore almost three quarters – 73% – have no idea how much the average weekly cost of a room in residential care is and 56% have no idea whether they would be entitled to state funding for a stay in a care home.
Professor Green adds: “This new research from Care England comes at a time when social care is high on the political agenda.”
At CooperBurnett we have built an excellent reputation for advising care home owners on site acquisition, disposal and finance. This work is led by Tom Lumsden, a partner in our Commercial Property team, who joined our firm in 2006.
“With ever-increasing life expectancy and rising rates of conditions such as dementia, the need for good quality care homes can only continue to increase,” says Tom.
