When CooperBurnett Property Litigation Partner John Spence was named as President of the Tunbridge Wells, Tonbridge & District Law Society (TWTDLS) at the beginning of this year, he said his biggest goal was to ‘wave the flag for our Society, raise its profile locally, get even more local lawyers engaged and make it even ‘bigger and better’.
Now he is in the midst of planning the largest event of the Society’s year, its annual dinner. Being held at The Spa Hotel in Tunbridge Wells on Friday 18 November, John explains: “I’m trying to reach a record number of attendees this year.”
The guest speaker this year is Iain Dale, the LBC radio broadcaster, writer and political commentator, while the event will be raising money for John’s chosen charity for his presidency, Demelza Hospice Care For Children, which we are also currently supporting at CooperBurnett. A representative from Demelza will be telling guests about the vital support the charity provides.
“The TWTDLS does much to champion the work of lawyers in this area and it’s a really useful way to develop and support those in our profession,” John explains.
CooperBurnett has been closely involved with the TWTDLS, which represents anyone involved in the legal profession, including solicitors, barristers, paralegals and trainees practicing and living in West Kent, for a number of years. Senior Associate Sarah Strong recently joined the Council, while Partners Victoria Sampson and Katie Gillam have held the position of President in the past, as did former Partner Jonathan Smithers, who went on to be President of the Law Society of England and Wales.
“We are proud to have somebody from CooperBurnett in the position of President of the TWTDLS once again and can see how much the Society has grown and developed under John’s leadership,” says Partner Joseph Oates. “The annual dinner is the flagship event of the Society’s calendar and we encourage law firms locally to support it.”
